2nd annual RGi Scholarship awarded to Kevin Mercy

Reinventing Geospatial®, Inc. (RGi®) is honored to announce that Kevin Mercy has been selected as the recipient of the 2nd annual $10,000 RGi Scholarship for Geospatial and Engineering, given in partnership with The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF).

Kevin is a senior at the University of Southern California (USC) where he is on track to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Archaeology, with a double minor in Human Security and Geospatial Intelligence and Computer Programming in 2020. In one of his stellar recommendation letters, Kevin’s professor described him as “the textbook definition of a self-starter,” and someone who “epitomizes our nation’s calling for the dedicated and inquisitive learner.”

For the past several months, Kevin has worked with The Aerospace Corporation and the USC Spatial Sciences Institute to create open source 3D GIS data service and analytic platforms that will help organizations to store, serve, and analyze 3D data, which is a wide-spread issue within the GEOINT community. In his spare time, Kevin serves as a board member of The Canterbury USC Foundation, where he helps run a hot meal food ministry program on USC’s campus for underprivileged college students that serves approximately 100 meals each week during the academic year.

“I am thrilled to have Kevin as our 2019 RGi Scholarship recipient,” said RGi CEO Stephen Gillotte. “He is the perfect composite of engineer, scientist, and humanist, which directly aligns with the core values of our company. I look forward to his many contributions to the GEOINT community and our nation.”

Reinventing Geospatial reinvents volunteering at FACETS’ Hypothermia Prevention Centers

Reinventing Geospatial®, Inc.’s (RGi’s®) unique volunteer efforts were recently featured in an article by FACETS, a non-profit organization that helps people impacted by poverty throughout Fairfax County, VA.

For the past two years, RGi has supported the FACETS Hypothermia Prevention and Response Program, which provides shelter for those in need during winter months. Early on, the RGi team saw an opportunity to add an educational element to the program and quickly began offering shelter guests instruction in basic computer skills and resume development. RGi purchased laptops to support the effort and created a custom curriculum that RGi’s volunteers teach to shelter guests.

“I love that FACETS helps people with the immediate effects of poverty as well as working towards a long-term solution,” said Mary Carome, Software Engineer at RGi. “I hope that by coming to the Hypothermia Clinics and providing computer training and resume help we are giving our guests skills that will help them today and for the rest of their life.”

A big thanks to all the RGi volunteers who help create an Immediate Impact™ for those in need!

RGi surpasses 2,000 food pack donation milestone for children in need

Since 2017, RGi has donated, packed, and delivered 2,016 P3 packs, representing more than 3 tons of food. These P3 packs allow students to focus on their education and not their hunger.

RGi Scholarship image

Reinventing Geospatial®, Inc. (RGi®) is honored to announce that David Runneals has been selected as the first recipient of the $10,000 RGi Scholarship for Geospatial and Engineering, given in partnership with The United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF).

David is a senior at Northwest Missouri State University, where he is on track to graduate with a degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in 2019. In his application essay, David wrote: “I have grown passionate [for] integrating data and technologies along with research and development, falling very much in line [with] my ultimate goal of working for a humanitarian relief or disaster response organization, where I am able to impact human lives while making data more open and accessible.”

For the past several years, David has served as a volunteer with the National Alliance for Public Safety GIS (NAPSG) Foundation’s Search & Rescue GIS Working Group, where he was an integral member of the disaster response team during the 2017 Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. As part of his work with NAPSG during the hurricanes, David provided technical support and developed innovative solutions to challenges facing first responders on the ground in Puerto Rico, including support with transportation information and data integration across disparate crowdsourced data efforts.

“David is the perfect recipient of the first-ever RGi Scholarship,” said RGi CEO Stephen Gillotte. “We’re thrilled with both his scholastic achievements and his humanitarian focus, and can’t wait to see how he continues to contribute to the future of GEOINT.”

There were bumps, bruises, laughs and tears throughout, but the team finished with pride in honor of founding board member Carrie Gillotte.

A heartfelt thanks to all of the family and friends who supported our riders and this great cause through both donations and well wishes.

RGi joins fight against ovarian cancer in honor of founding board member Carrie Gillotte

Reinventing Geospatial®, Inc. (RGi®) joins the fight against ovarian cancer, sponsoring a team of RGi’ers and family members who will cycle 300 miles from London to Paris in support of the Target Ovarian Cancer charity.

Earlier this year, we lost one of our founding and most beloved board members, Carrie Marie Gillotte, to ovarian cancer. The RGi Riders bicycle team will ride in honor of Carrie and all of the brave women battling this terrible disease.

The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often vague and subtle, making it difficult to diagnose. There is still no effective screening test for ovarian cancer. Only 19% of cases are caught before the cancer has spread beyond the ovary to the pelvic region, significantly impacting survival rates. Until we have better early detection tools, all women should be educated about the disease so they can achieve early diagnosis and successful treatment. Knowing the subtle signs and symptoms prevents cancer from stealing the lives from far too many vibrant, lovely women.

RGi chose to partner with Target Ovarian Cancer because of the organization’s extensive efforts to improve early diagnosis, fund life-saving research, and provide much-needed support to women with ovarian cancer.

With the goal of raising $3K, the RGi team will embark on their 4-day ride on September 12, 2018 in the English countryside, making their way through rural France before reaching the finish line at the Eiffel Tower.

Please join us in the fight against ovarian cancer by making a donation through RGi’s JustGiving fundraising page: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rgi  JustGiving is a fast and secure way to donate that sends funds directly to the charity.

Your donation will help make a difference!
